Blends in words are clusters of two or three consonants that appear together in a word, where each letter in the blend makes a sound and these sounds are then blended together. They can be found at the beginning, middle, or end of words and can begin or end a syllable. Blends are also sometimes called consonant clusters. For example, in the word "play," the "p" and "l" must be blended together to read the full word. Blends are not to be confused with digraphs and trigraphs, where a group of two or three letters respectively corresponds to a single sound.
