Chloroplasts are specialized plant cell organelles where photosynthesis happens, and they are found in the green tissues of plants and in many algae. They capture light energy and convert it into chemical energy, producing sugars and oxygen as byproducts. They are most abundant in leaf mesophyll cells, but can also be present in other photosynthetic tissues, including some non-green tissues in various algae and plants.
