Chondrocytes are cells that are responsible for the formation and maintenance of cartilage matrix. They are the only cells found in healthy cartilage and are metabolically active, synthesizing and turning over a large volume of extracellular matrix (ECM) components such as collagen and proteoglycans. Chondrocytes are pivotal in sustaining homeostasis in the articular cartilage (AC) joints, providing cushioning in joint movements. They are also responsible for chondral repair and can respond to outside trauma in case of tissue damage. Chondrocytes are found within intervertebral discs and in any form of articular cartilage. They distance themselves from each other by the cartilage matrix, and take charge of chondral repair. The chondrocytes in growing cartilages are capable of division, and they are found sitting in lacunae which are matrices enclosing the compartments.
