Certain triggers such as alcohol use or smoking cigarettes, change to a high altitude, bright light, exercise or exertion, heat, foods that contain nitrates, and cocaine use may also trigger cluster headaches.

• Diagnosis: Cluster headaches are diagnosed by a doctor based on the descriptions of the headache attacks and after other conditions have been ruled out.

• Treatment: Treatment for cluster headaches may include medications such as triptans, oxygen therapy, and nerve blocks. In some cases, surgery may be recommended.
