Dust mites are tiny, insect-like pests that commonly live in house dust. They feed on flakes of dead skin, or dander, that are shed by people and pets. Dust mites are too small for us to see and are not parasites that bite, sting or burrow into our bodies. Instead, people who are allergic to dust or dust mites are reacting to inhaling proteins in dust that comes from dust mite feces, urine or decaying bodies. Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments and can be found in areas such as bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains in your home. Dust mite allergy symptoms include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and runny nose, and can also include asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing. Dust mites can trigger mild to severe allergic symptoms and can be responsible for asthma attacks. To reduce the number of dust mites in your home, you can take actions such as reducing humidity, encasing your mattress and pillows in dust-proof or allergen impermeable covers, and washing all bedding and blankets once a week in hot water.
