Ear grommets are tiny tubes that are inserted into the eardrum to allow air to pass through the eardrum, keeping the air pressure on either side equal. They are used to treat glue ear, a condition where the middle part of the ear canal fills up with fluid, causing temporary hearing loss. Grommets are also used to treat recurrent middle ear infections. The procedure to insert grommets involves making a tiny hole in the eardrum and inserting the grommet into the hole. The grommet usually stays in place for six to twelve months and then falls out, which is normal and won’t affect the patient. The procedure is done in a hospital under general anaesthetic. Grommets are a temporary measure to help until the patients eustachian tubes mature to work naturally. Some risks associated with grommet insertion include scarring and infection.
