In European folklore of the medieval and early modern periods, familiars were believed to be supernatural entities or spiritual guardians that would protect or assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic. Familiars were often categorized as demons when they served witches, while they were more commonly thought of and described as fairies when working for cunning folk. The main purpose of familiars was to serve the witch, providing protection for them as they came into their new powers. Since the 20th century, some magical practitioners, including adherents of the Neopagan religion of Wicca, use the concept of familiars, due to their association with older forms of magic. These contemporary practitioners use pets or wildlife, or believe that invisible versions of familiars act as magical aides.

According to legend, familiars are sort of like guides, who take the form of an animal on Earth. They are loyal guardians and protectors to witches, who are sent to assist them with magic. Familiars (or imps) usually are small household pets that serve as a witch’s companion. They can be any type of animal, but are frequently depicted in historical texts as cats, dogs, toads, reptiles, or insects. Witches employ familiars in the practice of witchcraft. The role of the familiar is to serve – and even protect – their witch and assist in spellcasting and other magic workings. Familiars are also healers and magical practitioners in their own way.
