Farm animals are animals that are raised and kept for agricultural purposes. They are different from house pets because most of them have important jobs to do that keep the farm running. Some common farm animals include:
- Cows
- Chickens
- Pigs
- Geese
- Goats
- Sheep
- Horses
- Donkeys
- Water buffaloes
- Camels
- Llamas
- Alpacas
- Turkeys
Farm animals are farmed for a variety of reasons. Most are raised to be killed for their meat, while others produce something of value to humans, such as milk, eggs, wool, or honey. Some farm animals are also farmed for their skills, such as horses, mules, and burros.
The farming of livestock has changed dramatically over the past century. Many farms are now massive industrial-type facilities owned and operated by large corporations, known as factory farms. However, there are still smaller farms that are run by families.
If you are interested in adopting a farm animal, some farms offer adoption programs for animals such as goats, donkeys, pigs, and sheep.
