FEMA camps are a conspiracy theory that claims the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is planning to imprison US citizens in concentration camps. The theory is particularly popular within the American Patriot movement. However, FEMA is a United States government agency tasked with the effective management of major emergencies within the country, including ensuring the continuity of government during a large-scale disaster including a nuclear war. It provides federal relief to areas afflicted by natural disasters. FEMA has numerous detainment camps throughout the United States, some of which have been recently constructed and/or renovated and are fully staffed. However, the existence of these camps, coupled with Presidential Executive Orders giving the President and Department of Homeland Security (of which FEMA is now part) control over ‘national essential functions’ in the event of ‘catastrophic emergency,’ have resulted in concerns that the camps will be used to forcefully detain American citizens for unconstitutional purposes. It is important to note that FEMA has denied these rumors and stated that they are currently focusing their efforts on providing assistance to disaster survivors and the ongoing response and recovery efforts in Louisiana.
