Flavonoids are a large family of over 5,000 hydroxylated polyphenolic compounds that carry out important functions in plants, including attracting pollinating insects and protecting against UV radiation. They are found in many plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, teas, and wine. There are six main classes of flavonoids, each with its own chemical structure and health benefits:

  • Flavonols: The most studied flavonols are quercetin, myricetin, and fisetin. Flavonols are linked to many health benefits, including a lower risk of heart disease. They’re found in lettuce, tomatoes, onions, kale, apples, grapes, berries, tea, and red wine.

  • Isoflavones: These compounds are found mostly in legumes and soybeans and, less commonly, in other plants. Some are considered to be phytoestrogens, a form of estrogen that we can get from food.

  • Flavanones: Flavanones are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. They may also help manage weight and cholesterol. Flavanones are found in lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit.

  • Anthocyanins: These flavonoids give fruits and vegetables their red, blue, and purple colors. They have antioxidant properties and may help reduce inflammation and improve heart health.

  • Flavones: Flavones are found in parsley, thyme, and celery. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce the risk of certain cancers.

  • Flavonoids polymers: These are large molecules made up of many flavonoid units. They are found in tea, wine, and cocoa and have been linked to improved heart health and reduced inflammation.

Flavonoids have antioxidant properties and can help your body fight off potentially harmful molecules that can be introduced to the body. They also help regulate cellular activity and fight off free radicals that cause oxidative stress on your body. Including more flavonoids in your diet is a great way to help your body stay healthy and potentially decrease your risk of some chronic health conditions.
