Forged irons are a type of golf club that are made from a solid piece of metal that is heated and then stamped into the appropriate shape and loft. The metal used to create forged irons is heated to extreme temperatures to be formed and shaped, but it is always a solid throughout the entire process. The metal is actually heated and compressed multiple times in the forging process before reaching its final shape. All this pressure and heat put into a forged iron head during production enhances the metal’s molecular structure, making it much tighter and more consistent. Forged irons are made with softer steel that usually has more carbon in order to make them more workable. They tend to feel "softer" because they retain their grain structure better. One advantage of forged clubs is they can be bent more to accommodate loft and lie customization. Forged irons tend to be smaller and more feel-orientated, and they offer a much softer feel and additional workability for competent players that like to manipulate the ball flight. However, they don’t tend to be as long or forgiving as cast irons. Cast irons, on the other hand, are made from a mould and tend to be made from a stainless steel alloy. Cast irons tend to be cheaper to make and offer more distance and forgiveness on poor strikes.
