Gypsies, more accurately known as the Romani people, are an ethnic group originating from northern India, particularly the Punjab region. They migrated to Europe between the 8th and 10th centuries C.E. The term "Gypsy" stems from a mistaken belief that they came from Egypt. The Romani language, spoken by many Gypsies, derives from Indic languages like Sanskrit. Traditionally, they were nomadic and often worked as craftsmen, musicians, and entertainers. Over centuries, they have faced persecution and discrimination in Europe. The Romani population is diverse, with various subgroups such as the Sinti in Germany. Many still maintain distinct languages, customs, and a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle, although some live settled lives today.
