Eyelash mites, also known as Demodex mites, are tiny parasites that live in or near the hair follicles on the face and eyes, primarily near the eyelashes and eyebrows. They are a normal part of the bodys microbiome and feed on the oils and dead cells found on the surface of the skin. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are two species of eyelash mites present on human eyelashes. Eyelash mites are usually harmless and act as a natural cleaning system, but they can cause problems if there are too many of them. Some of the symptoms of an infestation of eyelash mites include red or dry eyes, swollen eyelids, sticky lashes, itching, burning or stinging, grittiness in the eyes, and crustiness around the outer edge of the eyelid. Eyelash mites are not typically dangerous and can actually serve helpful functions for the human skin.
