Nails are made of a hardened protein called keratin. Keratin is the same substance that makes up hooves, claws, and horns in animals. Fingernails and toenails are mostly composed of alpha-keratin, a tough protective protein that is also found in the hooves, claws, and horns of vertebrates. This protein is also present in the skin and hair.
