NFL players are wearing a device called the Q-Collar around their necks to help protect their brains during head impacts. The Q-Collar is a horseshoe-shaped collar that compresses against the jugular veins in the athletes neck, increasing the volume of blood in their skulls blood vessels. The increased blood volume then "creates a tighter fit of the brain inside the skull," which can reduce the "slosh" movement that can cause brain injury. The Q-Collar is not new, and some players have been wearing it since 2016. It is a medical device that players wear to help reduce brain injury and concussions. The Q-Collar is produced by a company called Q30 and is approved by the US Food & Drug Administration. It is not intended to prevent traditional concussive hits but is seeking to minimize the impact of the much more common subconcussive forces that are extremely common in sports like soccer and football.
