They can be both cancerous and non-cancerous, and their size can vary from less than 0.5 cm to more than 1 cm in diameter). Nodules can develop just below the skin, in deeper skin tissues, or internal organs. Some common types of nodules include:
-
Skin nodules: These are small firm lumps found in the skin and can include dermatofibroma and pyogenic granuloma).
-
Thyroid nodules: These are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within the thyroid gland located at the base of the neck. They can be benign or cancerous, and their causes can include a lack of iodine, hyperfunctioning thyroid, or inflammation.
-
Lung nodules: These are nodules that form on the inside of a persons lungs and can be caused by bacterial, fungal, or viral infections, inflammatory disorders, pulmonary infraction, or lung cancer.

Nodules can be diagnosed through a physical examination, imaging tests, or a biopsy. Its important to talk to a doctor if you notice the development of a nodule, as they can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying health condition.
