Orcas, also known as killer whales, are the largest member of the dolphin family. They are highly intelligent, social mammals that live in pods and can cooperatively hunt for prey. Orcas are apex predators and have a diverse diet, including fish, sharks, rays, and marine mammals such as seals, other species of dolphin, and whales. They are known to grab seals right off the ice and can take down whales larger than themselves, such as minke whales. Orcas are immediately recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white coloring, and each pod has distinctive noises that its members will recognize even at a distance. They are highly protective of their young, and other adolescent females often assist the mother in caring for them. Orcas are commonly referred to as "killer whales," despite being a type of dolphin. They are still hunted for food in small numbers in some countries, such as Greenland, Japan, Indonesia, and the Caribbean. In captivity, orcas do not thrive and are kept in artificial social groups.
