PEDs stands for Performance Enhancing Drugs. PEDs are substances taken in non-pharmacologic doses specifically for the purpose of improving sports performance. The most common PEDs include anabolic steroids, testosterone, human growth hormone, creatine, and ephedrine. While some PEDs do increase performance for athletes, the side effects often outweigh the benefits and can affect various body systems including the liver, heart, reproductive, skin, and psychiatric. The use of PEDs by children and teenagers has increased tremendously over the past decade. Anabolic steroids are synthetic variations of the male sex hormone testosterone and are the most widely misused APED. They promote the growth of skeletal muscle (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects) in both males and females. Anabolic steroids can cause severe, long-lasting, and in some cases, irreversible damage.
