A pelt is an animals skin, fur and all. The term "pelage" is sometimes used to refer to an animals complete coat. The term "fur" is also used to refer to animal pelts that have been processed into leather with their hair still attached. Historically, pelts were worn for their insulating quality, with aesthetics becoming a factor over time. Today, fur and trim used in garments may be dyed bright colors or to mimic exotic animal patterns, or shorn close like velvet. The manufacturing of fur clothing involves obtaining animal pelts where the hair is left on the animals processed skin. In contrast, making leather involves removing the hair from the hide or pelt and using only the skin. Fur is also used to make felt, which is used in hats and other clothing items.
In addition to its meaning as an animals skin, "pelt" can also refer to throwing something at someone over and over again, as in "pelting someone with spitballs". It can also mean to strike with a succession of blows or missiles, or to assail vigorously or persistently.
