Uterine polyps, also known as endometrial polyps, are growths attached to the inner wall of the uterus that expand into the uterus. They form as a result of cells in the lining of the uterus overgrowing and can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters. Most uterine polyps are benign, although some can be cancerous or can turn into cancer.

Symptoms of uterine polyps include vaginal bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, frequent, unpredictable periods whose lengths and heaviness vary, and infertility. Abnormal bleeding may be a sign of uterine polyps, especially if youre postmenopausal.

To diagnose uterine polyps, doctors may use a transvaginal ultrasound, hysterosonography, or hysteroscopy. Treatment for uterine polyps might involve hormonal medications or surgical removal. If a uterine polyp contains cancer cells, further evaluation and treatment will be necessary.

There is no sure way to prevent uterine polyps, but losing extra weight might help lower the risk.
