Progressives lived mainly in the cities, were college-educated, and believed in a strong central government. The term "progressive" has gained cultural currency, particularly in the 2016 Democratic primaries, and has been used to indicate affiliation with the left flank of the party. However, there is no precise definition of the term, and politicians, activists, and others disagree about what it means. Some cultural progressives may be economically centrist, conservative, or politically libertarian.
