Rhino horns have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat a wide variety of illnesses ranging from reducing fevers to stopping nosebleeds and preventing strokes. Rhino horn is processed into pills, tablets, treatments, and tonics and sold worldwide. However, there is no scientific evidence that rhino horn has any medicinal value. In fact, consuming rhino horns is the same as consuming human nails and hair. Rhino horn has also been used as a status symbol to display success and wealth. Some wealthy buyers bid for antique rhino horn carvings such as cups or figurines to display or as investments. Rhino horn necklaces, bracelets, and beads have also become popular in modern markets.

It is important to note that rhinos are extremely endangered, mostly due to illegal trade. Currently, fewer than 14,000 rhinos exist in the wild. The war on poaching will ultimately be won in Asia, and it has to start with demand. Efforts have been devoted to reducing the demand for rhino horn in Vietnam, one of the worlds largest consumers of rhino horn. The government of Vietnam increased sanctions on the illegal trade and use of rhino horns in 2015, and conservation organizations have tried to educate Vietnamese consumers about Africas rhino poaching crisis and the uselessness of rhino horn in medications.
