Rushing yards is a statistic in football that measures how many yards a player has gained or lost when running with the ball without receiving a pass. Rushing yards can be counted for individual players or for teams in single plays, full games, or full seasons. Running backs are usually the players who rush the most and thus have the most rushing yards per season. Other players who carry the ball, such as quarterbacks and wide receivers, also typically have significant rushing yards numbers. Rushing yards are calculated by adding up the number of yards a player collects each time they run the ball. Statisticians can add up those numbers to determine how many yards a player or team rushed for during a specific game, season, or all-time. A player or team can receive negative rushing yards if they run the ball and are stopped by the defense before reaching the line of scrimmage. Rushing yards are different from receiving yards, which are the yards gained by a player who catches a pass and runs with the ball, and passing yards, which are the yards gained by an offensive team on completed passes.
