In strength training, a "rep" is short for "repetition," which is a single execution of an exercise. For example, one pushup is one rep, and 10 pushups are 10 reps. A "set" is a collection of reps. For instance, three sets of 12 repetitions would mean performing the exercise 12 times, taking a break, and then repeating the exercise two more times. Completing several reps of a specific exercise in a row is called a set. It is a common workout strategy to do a planned number of sets of each exercise, with time built in for a short rest between these sets. Using reps and sets to organize workouts has many benefits, including gauging baseline strength, measuring progress, and taking the guesswork out of strength training.
