SLED agents are law enforcement officers who work for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) . SLED is a statewide investigative law enforcement agency in South Carolina that provides manpower and technical assistance to other law enforcement agencies and conducts investigations on behalf of the state. SLED agents work cases involving all types of offenses, including crimes of violence, computer crimes, vehicle theft, child fatalities, and crimes against vulnerable adults. They also investigate officer-involved shootings, public corruption, insurance fraud, as well as narcotics and alcoholic beverage violations. SLED agents have statewide law enforcement authority, but they do not engage in traffic enforcement unless specifically requested by the Highway Patrol or local law enforcement agency, or must act to prevent an accident or a situation that would endanger the public. To become a SLED agent, applicants must go through an extensive background examination.
