Spacers for braces, also known as orthodontic separators, are small elastic or metal separators placed between teeth to create gaps. They are used in the beginning stages of orthodontic treatment, usually during the second appointment, to prepare the mouth for braces. The purpose of spacers is to create a little space between certain teeth, usually molars, so that orthodontists can install metal bands around those teeth. Spacers can consist of different materials, but the most common types are rubber spacers and metal spacers. Rubber spacers are small elastic loops that slide between two back teeth, while metal spacers are small metal rings that are inserted between two back teeth. The width of each spacer is designed to make sure there’s enough room for both bands to fit comfortably and securely around each tooth for them to move into position correctly. Spacers are usually worn for 1-2 weeks before the bands are installed on the back teeth. Patients may experience some discomfort or pain while wearing spacers, but they are a vital first step in the journey to straighter and more evenly spaced teeth.
