Springtails are small hexapods that form the largest of the three lineages of modern hexapods that are no longer considered insects. They are commonly found in moist soil, decaying plant material, leaf litter, and other decaying organic matter, where they are primarily detritivores and microbivores. Springtails are named for the special fork-like structure they have under their abdomens called a furcula, which allows them to jump up to several inches high. They are usually dark-colored, brown, grey, or black, and range in size from 1/16th to 1/8th inch long. Springtails feed on decaying plant matter, fungi, molds, or algae, and play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to break down organic material and return nutrients to the soil. While they are harmless to humans, they can become nuisance pests in large numbers, and are often found in areas of high moisture and in organic debris.
