Symptoms of an ulcer can vary depending on the location of the ulcer. The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is stomach pain, which can feel like a burning or gnawing sensation in the center of the abdomen. Other common symptoms include:
- Feeling of fullness, bloating, or belching
- Indigestion, especially of fatty foods
- Nausea and vomiting
- Intolerance to fatty foods
- Heartburn

- Comes and goes days or weeks at a time
- The discomfort lasts for minutes or hours
Less commonly, ulcers may cause severe signs or symptoms such as:
- Vomiting or vomiting blood, which may appear red or black
- Dark blood in stools, or stools that are black or tarry
- Trouble breathing
- Feeling faint
- Unexplained weight loss
- Appetite changes
