Symptoms of strep throat typically include:
- Sudden onset of throat pain and sore throat
- Painful swallowing
- Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
- Tiny red spots (petechiae) on the roof of the mouth
- Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
- Fever
- Headache
- Rash, sometimes a sandpaper-like rash known as scarlet fever
- Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, especially in children
- Body aches and general malaise
- Bad breath
- Loss of appetite
Strep throat usually does not cause cough, runny nose, or hoarseness, which are more typical of viral infections
