To obtain a CDL permit, there are two types of tests that must be passed: knowledge exams and skills tests. The knowledge exams consist of three tests:
-
General Knowledge Exam: All commercial motor vehicle drivers (class A, B and C vehicles) must take this exam. To pass, you must answer at least 80% of the general knowledge questions correctly. The exam is taken on a computer and is offered in several languages.
-
Endorsement Exam: In addition to the general knowledge exam, you must take a special knowledge exam for each endorsement you want to add to your CDL. For example, if you want to transport hazardous materials, you must take the Hazardous Materials endorsement exam.
-
Air Brakes Exam: If you want to drive a vehicle with air brakes, you must take the Air Brakes exam. If you do not take this exam, you will be restricted to driving vehicles without air brakes.
Once you pass the required knowledge exams, you can take the CDL skills tests. The skills tests consist of a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. You must take the skills test in the type of vehicle in which you want to be licensed. The test is administered by a DMV representative in a vehicle provided by you that is in safe working condition.
