The Old Testament is a collection of religious texts that hold immense significance for followers of Judaism and Christianity. It consists of 46 books, which are divided into several categories. The first five books, also known as the Pentateuch or Torah, are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books provide accounts of creation, the fall of humanity, the patriarchs, and the origin of Israel. The historical books, which tell the history of the Israelites, include Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah. The poetic and wisdom books, which deal with questions of good and evil in the world, include Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. The prophetic books, which warn of the consequences of turning away from God, include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. It is important to note that the Catholic and Orthodox churches include additional books, called the Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical literature, bringing the total to 46 books.
