There are six major types of anxiety disorders, which are:

  1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): This involves persistent and excessive worry that interferes with daily activities. The worries are hard to control and keep popping up, making it difficult for people to focus on their activities. Worries happen often and intensely enough that they make it difficult to concentrate and may cause or worsen headaches, stomach aches, muscle tension, and irritability.

  2. Phobias: Phobia-related disorders happen when you have an irrational or excessive worry or fear about something. Even though you know your thoughts are irrational, you may be afraid of an object, situation, or place.

  3. Panic Disorder: Panic disorder involves sudden and repeated attacks of fear that last for several minutes or longer. These attacks are called panic attacks and can cause physical symptoms such as chest pain, heart palpitations, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath.

  4. Social Anxiety Disorder: Social anxiety disorder is when someone has an intense fear of social situations, such as speaking in public or meeting new people. This fear is so strong that it gets in the way of the individual’s functioning at home, school, work, or in their social circle.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): OCD is a disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions). Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): PTSD is a disorder that can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, serious accident, terrorist incident, war/combat, or physical or sexual assault. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
