There are seven Horcruxes in the Harry Potter series, which are objects that contain pieces of Voldemorts soul. Voldemort created six Horcruxes within his lifetime, in order to stave off his chances of truly dying. Since they are of utmost importance to him, Voldemort decided to turn important pieces of Hogwarts and magical history into Horcruxes. The seven Horcruxes are:
- Tom Riddles diary
- Marvolo Gaunts ring
- Salazar Slytherins locket
- Helga Hufflepuffs cup
- Rowena Ravenclaws diadem
- Nagini
- Harry Potter (unintentionally created by Voldemort)
Harry and his friends went on a mission to destroy all seven Horcruxes in order to defeat Voldemort. Its described in detail in the books that Horcruxes can only be destroyed by very few, but powerful, means, and to create one a wizard must first commit a murder to split their soul.
