The draft ages refer to the age range of men who are required to register with the Selective Service System, which is responsible for conducting a military draft if one is ever needed. The current draft ages are:

  • Registration: Almost all male U.S. citizens and immigrants, ages 18 through 25, are required to register with the government.

  • Priority for Draft: If a draft were held today, those who are 20 years old -- or turning 20 during the year in which the numbers are drawn -- would be the first to go. Beginning Jan. 1 of the year an eligible male turns 21, he would drop into the second priority category, and men born the following year would move into the priority group one. Each succeeding year, a draft eligible mans priority number would move down one.

  • Age of Liability: A man is liable for the draft until he turns 26 years old.

It is important to note that the United States has not had a draft since 1973, and Congress and the President would have to authorize a draft if one were ever needed.
