If you expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for 2023, after subtracting your withholding and refundable credits, and you expect your withholding and refundable credits to be less than the smaller of 90% of the tax to be shown on your 2023 tax return or 100% of the tax shown on your 2022 tax return, you must pay estimated tax for 2023. The payment due dates for estimated tax payments in 2023 are as follows:
- First Payment: April 18, 2023
- Second Payment: June 15, 2023
- Third Payment: September 15, 2023
- Fourth Payment: January 16, 2024
It is important to note that if you file your 2023 tax return by January 31, 2024, and pay the entire balance due with your return, you wont have to make the final estimated payment for 2023, which would normally be due on January 16, 2024. Additionally, if you pay all your estimated taxes for 2023 before April 18, 2023, you will not have to pay any more taxes for the rest of the year. If you miss one of the four estimated tax payment deadlines for 2023, youll incur a late penalty of 0.5% of your unpaid balance per month or partial month, up to 25%, plus interest.
