The handles in cars, also known as "grab handles," are installed on the ceiling above doors in most cars. They are mainly there to make it easier for people to climb in and out of the car, especially for those who need a little extra help getting in and out of the car, such as people with disabilities, older people, and pregnant people. The handles are strong enough for a regular person to prop themselves up a little bit and get comfortable in their seat or lift their legs out of the car. They are also useful for hoisting oneself up into the car and then lowering oneself back down onto the step or sidewalk without having to jump. The drivers door usually lacks a grab handle because the steering wheel can function as a makeshift grab handle, and it would also block the path if someone were to raise or lower themselves into (or out of) the car via a grab handle above the window. Additionally, drivers inclined to grab the handle while driving would be steering with just one hand, which could be a safety concern.
