The judges press the number of the score they are going to give so that it can come up on the screen. The keypads are located in front of the judges on their desks. The judges have to key in their score the moment the routine ends and then be ready to give their comments once the contestants are with Bruce. The keypads are used to give the graphics team backstage enough time to cue up the on-screen score. The keypads are not random sound bite generators or plugs that send comments up the judges arms.
