Seminal plasma is the fluid in which sperm is ejaculated. The major components of the seminal plasma in the male reproductive system are mucus, spermatozoa, and various secretions of accessory glands. Seminal plasma is rich in fructose, citric acid, lipids, buffering agents, proteolytic enzymes, and hormones like prostaglandins and calcium. It also contains clotting proteins and ascorbic acid. The function of seminal plasma is to provide nourishment and protection to sperms, as well as to carry, protect, and nourish spermatozoa after ejaculation up to fertilization. Moreover, seminal fluid contact at conception contributes to activating the endometrial gene expression and immune cell changes required for robust implantation, influencing not only the quality of the ensuing pregnancy but also the health of offspring.
