The primary professions of Senators and Representatives in the United States Congress vary, but law, business, and politics are among the most common. According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, the most common professions among members of Congress are law and business. In particular, lawyers have occupied between one-third and half of Senate seats in the 79th – 113th Congresses. Business and banking appeared as the second-most-common occupation. Across all Congresses, backgrounds in education have also been common, but far less so. According to another report by the Congressional Research Service, the overwhelming majority, 96%, of Members of Congress have a college education. In addition to law and business, there are also members of Congress who have backgrounds in medicine, dentistry, and other fields. However, the most common profession among members of Congress is that of a public servant.
