The seven deadly sins are a grouping and classification of vices within Christian teachings. They are also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins. According to the standard list, they are:
- Pride
- Greed
- Wrath
- Envy
- Lust
- Gluttony
- Sloth
These sins are discussed in treatises and depicted in paintings and sculpture decorations on Catholic churches as well as older textbooks. The seven deadly sins were first compiled by Pope Gregory I around the year 600. Each of these sins goes against the root of Christianity, which is love for God, love for our fellow man, and love for our bodies. The Bible teaches us that these sins are attitudes and behaviors that oppose Gods will and damage our relationship with Him. However, the Bible also assures us that God is merciful and offers forgiveness and redemption through Jesus Christ for these sins.
