Cerenia is a medication used to treat vomiting and motion sickness in dogs and cats. It is also used to treat acute nausea and vomiting in dogs and can alleviate nausea associated with chemotherapy. While direct side effects from this medication are rare in dogs, they can occur and may include:
- Decreased energy level (lethargy) or sedation
- Decreased appetite and weight loss
- Diarrhea
- Incoordination
- Excessive drooling
- Vomiting or retching
- Trembling or muscle tremors
Other rare side effects in dogs may include allergic reactions, uncoordinated walking, and convulsions. Cats may also experience abnormal breathing, recumbency (laying down and unable to get up), vomiting, panting, and muscle tremors. If youre introducing your pet to the medication for the first time, it’s wise to set out on a “test” drive before hitting the road for the real trip. This way you can monitor how well your dog is responding to the medication and if it’s a suitable option long-term. Cerenia is not recommended for use in dogs less than 16 weeks old and should be used with caution in puppies under 16 weeks of age when using the higher, motion-sickness dosing, as bone marrow suppression has occurred in these cases. It should also be used with caution in pets that have heart or liver disease, or pets that are pregnant and/or nursing. If you believe your pet may be experiencing any side effects of Cerenia, consult your veterinarian.
