Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine that leads out of the stomach, called the duodenum. The most common symptom of a stomach ulcer is a burning or gnawing pain in the center of the abdomen. However, stomach ulcers arent always painful, and some people may experience other symptoms, such as:
- Indigestion
- Heartburn and acid reflux
- Feeling sick
- Abdominal pain just below the ribcage
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Bright or altered blood present in vomit or bowel motions
- Symptoms of anemia, such as light-headedness
- Shock due to blood loss – a medical emergency
Less often, ulcers may cause severe signs or symptoms such as vomiting or vomiting blood, which may appear red or black, unexpected weight loss, blood in your stool or dark stools, and pain in your back. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.
