Skin cancer is a disease that involves the growth of abnormal cells in your skin tissues. Normally, as skin cells grow old and die, new cells form to replace them. When this process doesn’t work as it should — like after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun — cells grow more quickly. These cells may be noncancerous (benign), which don’t spread or cause harm, or they may be cancerous. The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change on your skin — typically a new growth or a change in an existing growth or mole. Here are some of the signs of skin cancer:

• A new growth: This could be a new mole, bump, or patch on your skin that wasnt there before.

• A sore that doesnt heal: If you have a sore that doesnt heal after a few weeks, it could be a sign of skin cancer.

• A change in an existing growth or mole: If you have a mole or growth on your skin that changes in size, shape, or color, or becomes itchy, painful, or bleeds, it could be a sign of skin cancer.

• Asymmetry: If a mole or spot has an irregular shape with two parts that look very different, it could be a sign of melanoma.

• Border: If the border of a mole or spot is irregular or jagged, it could be a sign of melanoma.

• Color: If the color of a mole or spot is uneven, it could be a sign of melanoma.

• Diameter: If a mole or spot is larger than the size of a pea, it could be a sign of melanoma.

• Evolving: If a mole or spot has changed during the past few weeks or months, it could be a sign of melanoma.
