Football helmet stickers are small stickers that are affixed to a high school or college football players helmet. They are used to denote either individual or team accomplishments and are considered a reward system offered to players by coaches. Stickers can be earned for touchdowns, receiving or rushing yards, tackles, sacks, interceptions, and special team achievements. The practice of awarding helmet stickers began in 1961 when Rutgers defensive backs coach Dewey King awarded decals for interceptions only. The idea was later adopted by Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes in 1968, and the buckeye sticker reward system was born. Each university has a unique sticker system, and not all NCAA football teams use them. The stickers are a source of pride and recognition for the players and the fans, and they show how well the players have performed and contributed to the teams success.
