Dengue fever is a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people. Most people who get dengue won’t have symptoms, but for those that do, the most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and beyond the viruss incubation period. Symptoms of dengue typically last 2–7 days, and most people will recover after about a week.

Symptoms of severe dengue, which is a medical emergency, can develop quickly and often come after the fever has gone away. Warning signs of severe dengue usually begin in the 24–48 hours after your fever has gone away. Immediately go to a local clinic or emergency room if you or a family member has any of the following symptoms:

  • Belly pain, tenderness
  • Vomiting (at least 3 times in 24 hours)
  • Bleeding from the nose or gums
  • Vomiting blood, or blood in the stool
  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Pale and cold skin
  • Rapid breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Blood in vomit or stool

Severe dengue can result in shock, internal bleeding, and even death. People with weakened immune systems as well as those with a second or subsequent dengue infection are believed to be at greater risk for developing severe dengue.

It is crucial to seek medical attention promptly if you suspect dengue fever. If you have dengue or live in an area where dengue is common, go to the nearest ER immediately if you experience any of the severe symptoms mentioned above.
