Pneumonia is an infection in one or both of the lungs that can range from mild to severe. The symptoms of pneumonia can vary depending on the cause of the infection, age, and overall health. Common symptoms of pneumonia in adults include:

• Fever
• Chills
• Cough, usually with phlegm (a slimy substance from deep in your lungs)
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain when you breathe or cough
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Diarrhea

In some cases, pneumonia can cause serious complications such as bacteremia, which happens when the bacteria move into the bloodstream and can lead to septic shock.

It is important to note that older adults and people who have serious illnesses or weak immune systems may have fewer and milder symptoms of pneumonia. They may even have a lower than normal temperature, and sometimes sudden changes in mental awareness.

If you feel unwell and have typical symptoms of pneumonia, you should see your GP. Seek urgent medical attention if you’re experiencing severe symptoms, such as rapid breathing, chest pain, or confusion.
