Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the human respiratory system. When an adult gets RSV infection, they typically have mild cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, sneezing, and low-grade fever. However, in some cases, RSV can cause more acute symptoms, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing, which can lead to severe illnesses such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Older adults are among the most vulnerable populations, and they are at higher risk of severe RSV infection. Emergency symptoms include shortness of breath, high fever, bluish tint to the skin, wheezing, and worsening cough. If an older adult is having trouble breathing or their skin turns bluish, they should call 911 right away. It is important to know the symptoms of RSV and when to seek emergency help.
