Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection that usually attacks the lungs, but it can also spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms of TB disease depend on where in the body the TB bacteria are growing. The symptoms of active TB disease in the lungs usually begin gradually and worsen over a few weeks. They may include:

  • A cough that lasts more than three weeks
  • Pain in the chest
  • Coughing up blood or mucus (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • No appetite
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Sweating at night

Symptoms of TB disease in other parts of the body depend on the area affected. For example, bone pain may mean that the bacteria have invaded your bones. Symptoms of extrapulmonary TB vary, but can include fever, chills, night sweats, weight loss, not wanting to eat, tiredness, and not feeling well in general. People with latent TB infection do not feel sick, do not have any symptoms, and cannot spread TB to others. If you have been exposed to TB, it is important to see a healthcare provider and to let them find out if you have TB. If you think you have TB, you should see a GP if you have a cough that lasts more than three weeks or if you cough up blood.
