The tassels that Jewish people wear are called tzitzit. They are attached to the four corners of a garment, such as a tallit or tallit katan, which is a special undershirt worn daily in Orthodox Judaism. The tzitzit are made of four strands, which are knotted and hang down, appearing to be eight. One of the strands must be made of the special blue dye called techelet, which is mentioned in the Torah. The purpose of tzitzit is to remind the wearer of the commandments of the Torah. According to traditional Jewish law, one must have tzitzit on every four-cornered garment one wears, but today most clothing doesn’t have corners, so a special garment called a tallit is worn.
