Australia has three levels of government:

• Federal Government : This is the national level, based in Canberra, with the decision-making body called the Federal Parliament, consisting of two houses - the House of Representatives and the Senate. The leader of the federal government is the Prime Minister. Responsibilities include foreign affairs, social security, industrial relations, trade, immigration, currency, and defence

• State and Territory Governments : There are six states and two territories, each with its own parliament (except Queensland, which has a single house). The leader of a state government is called the Premier, while the leader of a territory government is called the Chief Minister. State and territory governments handle justice, consumer affairs, health, education, forestry, public transport, and main roads

• Local Government : Local governments are usually called city councils or shire councils, established by state governments to manage local community needs. Councillors or aldermen form the council, led by a Mayor or Shire President. Local government responsibilities include local road maintenance, garbage collection, building regulations, land subdivisions, public health, and recreation facilities such as swimming pools

These three levels work together to provide services and governance across Australia, with distinct but sometimes shared responsibilities
